Visiting SC

Before we met my family for vacation, Joe & the kids and I drove down to SC to have a quick visit with friends.  We don't regret our decision to move back to Ohio, but sometimes we really miss living in South Carolina and our friends there.  We hadn't been there to visit in 2 years and that trip was less than 24 hours, so we were long over due for a visit.  Unfortunately, this one was also a quick visit (just 48 hours) and we weren't able to see all our friends.  It was a last minute decision to go since we weren't sure if we would be able to with my issues and Will's recent heart cath.  We stayed with our friends Nick & Mandy.  What's great about staying with them is they have a little girl who's 3 and their son is 7 months, so the kids had a blast playing with them!

Our only full day there, we went to downtown Charleston (which just happened to also be my birthday).  We had lunch at the Noisy Oyster, visited the South Carolina Aquarium (Nick & Mandy have a family pass so we got in free!), and walked around downtown.  It was a FANTASTIC day for walking around!  The temp topped out at only 84 degrees and it was slightly overcast and breezy, so much nicer than the normal 90's and sunny and humid and you sweat just standing still.

Feeding the sting rays.

We very often heard "Hey Julianna" or "C'mon Taylor"...these 2 loved being together!

We let Julianna splash in the fountain at Waterfront Park.

Sadly, there was some major camera fail going on the day we were downtown.  My camera would randomly stop focusing.  I couldn't get it to work on the automatic or manual settings, so I didn't get to take a lot of the pictures I really wanted to.  I can't wait until our next visit to SC, hopefully this time it won't be so long between trips!

1st Birthday Party

Last night was Will's 1st birthday party.  I had wanted a huge celebration for my little heart warrior, but my present state of being made the final decision.  So we had a family affair with grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins.  It was a monster themed party for our little monster :o)

The birthday boy looked so grown-up!

He had an adorable smash cake thanks to my friend Sarah (owner of Tutu Sweet) and he loved every bite!

It was a wonderful party and I am so thankful for such a healthy little boy!  One year ago we were gearing up for a heart cath and who knew what else and today we have a med-free little guy who has amazed us and his cardiologists.  Happy birthday little man!

Welcome to the World

I finally have time to write about Will's birth. I'm sitting in his PICU room right now and since I can't hold him the only things I can do today are blog, FB & fulfill my milk maid duties.

I actually ended up in L&D twice the weekend before Will was born. On Saturday night my right leg, ankle & foot swelled up ridiculously huge and really hurt to touch. My left leg was normal. Of course my OB thought it could be a blood clot and wanted me to go to the hospital right away to get checked out. Apparently there is NO ONE at the hospital that can do the ultrasound to check for blood clots after 7pm, so they told me to go home and come back in the morning for a scan.

The next morning, Dr O called. He was at the hospital to check on me and was wondering here I was. I told him they sent me home and he was furious! He had told them the night before that he wanted me admitted until I could get the scan on my leg, but they didn't do it. So I made a trip back to the hospital and had my leg scanned. Everything checked out fine and apparently I just randomly had only one leg swell up. What can I say, if anything weird can happen during pregnancy it happened to me.

I didn't feel very good all day Sunday. I felt as though I was constantly on the verge of throwing up. The only food I had all day was an apple, half a breakfast sandwich, and half a slice of bread. As the day went on, my contractions started to pick up. By about 9pm, I was having contractions every 4-7 minutes and they were really strong! I couldn't "talk" through these. So I called Dr O's answering service (who didn't even tell me they would page him and have him call me-they put me on hold while they called him...think I called them a lot???). Of course I was sent back to the hospital. I called my parents and told them what was going on and they came to the hospital. So did Erin.

Once I was there, lucky me got sick. I don't mean I threw up a little, I got really sick! And multiple times! At that point combining the throwing up with all my contractions I was told I was officially in labor and I was admitted. Despite being in labor, they said it still wasn't too bad (I disagreed!) and they wanted to hold off my c-section until my scheduled time the next morning if possible. My parents decided to stay the night at our house since it was so much closer than theirs, and Erin went home with the plan of coming back first thing in the morning. So then began one of the worst nights ever! I was in labor but not given anything for pain, or to slow down the contractions, or to help me sleep. I was miserable.

Finally, at 8am, a nurse came into my room and introduced herself as the nurse that would be going with me for my section. I said hello and asked if the section was still scheduled for 11am. I was SHOCKED when she told me I was going right then!! I called my parents and told them to get there ASAP! Thank goodness they were at our house (only 10 minutes away) and they made it there just in time to see me getting pushed to the OR (they didn't make it to the hospital in time to see me at all before Julianna was born). Joe called his mom and she and my sister got there right after I got to the OR.

Just before my c-section.
Joe getting ready to be a daddy again!

I was taken to the OR and wow! things were so much calmer than last time. I was more relaxed (as relaxed as you can be when your about to be cut in half and have your internal organs on the outside of your body), the doctors weren't rushed, the nurses were all calm, it was soooo much better. I got my spinal, which was so much better than the one I got for my cerclage in December. Then they prepped me and brought Joe in. I refused a lot of the meds they offered me. I probably would have felt much better if I had taken them, but I had so many meds during Julianna's section that I hardly remember any of it. I wanted to remember Will's birth.
I was surprisingly calm during the whole thing. And at 8:40am on Monday, March 29th, William Joseph was born. He was 37 weeks 4 days (full term!!!!!!)
Welcome to the world Will! (That's fabulous Dr O holding him)
When I heard that first cry, I cried. I said I wouldn't, but I couldn't help it. Then when Dr O held him up all I could say was "We have a huge baby!" Remember, compared to Julianna he was huge!
Will cried and cried, it was wonderful!

He weighed 7lbs 14oz and was 19 inches long.

Will was taken to the NICU (as was planned) and the transport team at the children's hospital was called to come get him. Joe went with Will to the NICU, there was no reason he needed to sit with me while I was reassembled. Our parents and my sister all got to see him as he was taken to the NICU.
After about an hour in recovery, my bed got wheeled to Will's room and I got to see him before he was transported. Amazingly, he was in the same room Julianna spent her first few hours (and then the next 66 days) in. Both my kiddos were in the same NICU room. I got to hold him for about 20 minutes before he had to leave. That was the last I would get to see him until I was discharged 4 days later.
When we found out Will had HLHS we made a plan for his birth day. Joe and his mom went with Will, and my parents and sister stayed with me. It was the best way we could make sure there was someone at both hospitals. Instead of the NICU at the Children's hospital, Will went to the PICU (apparently not uncommon for cardiac patients). In the PICU he got his own room and nurse, and of course all the customary wires, tubes and machines that come with intensive care.

Will's room in the PICU.

Once Will was stable, Joe came back to see me, and show me all the pictures he took. We decided we make beautiful kids, just sadly can't make healthy ones. That night despite having a baby in the PICU, we both slept. We had been running on empty for a week. Since Will's heart defect had been found neither of us slept well and sometimes not at all, but now he was here, he was stable and things were looking better. So we slept. And so did Will.
Our little man.

A Week's Worth of Celebrating!

I wish when I was little my birthday celebrations lasted almost a whole week! Julianna's did this year. It all started on her birthday, last Tuesday, when she got her birthday present from us, her kitchen made by daddy and Grandpa K & her apron and chef's hat made by me.

Little Miss Susie Homemaker in action

So stinkin' cute!
Then on Wednesday, Erin brought Ian & Ellie over to give Julianna her gift. They also brought yummy birthday cupcakes.
Mmmmm
Ellie thoroughly enjoyed her cupcake.
Ian like the rings from on top of the cupcakes the best.
Then yesterday, we had Julianna's birthday dinner with her grandparents. This is when she got her birthday cake. Please excuse the slightly crooked cake...I can never seem to get cakes level! She also got the rest of her birthday presents from family.
I think she may be drooling
She stayed miraculously clean while eating her cake!

Even though we didn't have an actual birthday party for her, I think Julianna loved her week of celebrating just as much!

2 Years

Wow I can't believe how far Julianna has come in the last 2 years! Today is her birthday and she has shown us what an amazing and strong little girl she is right from the start. I don't even know what all to say about her. She is my miracle girl. I am so proud to be her mama!
Happy Birthday Julianna!
Mommy and Daddy love you sooooooo much!

For My Little Chef

When I bake, I always wear an apron. I have about half a dozen different styles (you should see how hot they look on a pregnant mama). Julianna usually will get one out for herself and wants to wear it. She's my little chef. Julianna's birthday is Tuesday...wow...and we decided (more like I decided and roped Joe in) to build Julianna a play kitchen. Well, Joe and his dad built the kitchen, which is almost finished. I decided my part would be to complete some of the details on the kitchen and to make Julianna her very own apron and chef's hat.

I used the tutorial from Making It Fun to make her apron. I made a few modifications (like no pocket because I was afraid I wouldn't have enough fabric), but it was so easy to make. I think it took about 40 minutes start to finish.

Julianna's completed apron

Making it Fun also had a tutorial for making a chef's hat, but I couldn't get the PDF to open. So I used one from Skip To My Lou. It was super easy too! The only suggestion I would have is to make sure you have unscented dental floss (the pattern uses it to help gather the hat), Julianna's has a nice minty smell to it. :0)

I am so excited about how they turned out and I can't wait until we can give Julianna her birthday present! I know she will love it!

Birthday Presents & A Big Shopping List

I spent some of my afternoon today working on a timeline for our family. Now that Christmas has passed, we have exactly 3 weeks to accomplish our next few goals. Why 3 weeks? Well the first goal is to finish Julianna's birthday presents, a wooden kitchen made by daddy and Grandpa K & something for it made by me (I can't decide between more felt food or a cute apron & chef's hat), and her birthday is 3 weeks from tomorrow, January 19th.

The second goal is to be completely ready for Baby K by January 20. On January 20th, in case you've been living in a hole and not reading my blog, is when I hit 27 weeks and 6 days, aka the dreaded day. That is when Julianna was born. I am determined to be ready before that day.

So, my afternoon was spent searching the internet for ideas for Julianna's present and finishing up my list of things we still need to buy for Baby K. What might we still need to buy for a baby? A whole crapload of stuff. We have all the big stuff, but going from a little girl to a little boy, there are things we cannot (translation: Joe won't let us) use again.

So, here's what we still need to buy:

crib mattress (we have one, but it doesn't quite fit the crib right)
1 more crib sheet
water proof pad (we still use Julianna's on her bed)
1 more changing pad cover (our pink one was donated to Emma)
newborn & 0-3mos onesies
hats
newborn diapers
size 1 diapers
sensitive wipes
bath sponge (we use this in the big tub instead of a baby bathtub)
baby shampoo/soap
baby powder
nice bibs
newborn pacifiers & a Wubbanub (google it, it's a LIFESAVER!)
nipples for bottles
A few more bottles
1 can of formula (just in case)
bottle brush
gas drops
Dreft (got to wash all those baby clothes)

I don't go back to the OB until January 19, which I am NOT happy about, so I am hoping all these preparations (birthday & baby) will keep me occupied so I don't freak out too much.

Beachy-keen

Even though Julianna HATED the beach we did make it down there a time or two.

Every year, my sister & her fam take a picture of their footprints in the sand, we took our first one this year.
Walking on the beach. The stroller was about the only way we could get her even on the beach.
The one & only time Julianna did not scream when we set her down. This was the very first morning there, and the first time we set her down.
We attempted to take family pictures the last day there, but there were some storms coming in and it was SOOO windy!
It was so nice to wake up every morning and go for a walk.
**Oh and Joe celebrated his 29th birthday while we were there...HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my AWESOME husband!!!

Holy Crap, I'm 30!

So, today is my 30th birthday. I'm not depressed or feeling old. I mean why should I feel any older than I did yesterday when I was still 29? I have a friend that instead of turning 30 she claimed she was turning 20-10. I am OK with saying 30. But there are a few things, memories actually, that make me feel old.

When you're a kid you perceive your parents as old. It's just the way things are. You are a kid. Your parents are old. And because of his idea that parents always seem old to their kids, I am haunted by some memories that make me feel old.

When my dad turned 30, my mom threw him a big party. She went all out. Bonfire. Balloons. Games. Yes, she went big & it was all a surprise. My favorite part, was that the guest could play the games and win tickets. What were the tickets for you may ask. They got one water balloon for each ticket they earned. And then, later in the party, my dad had to stand in front of a chalk line silhouette and everyone got to throw their balloons at him. It was a blast.

Yes, I remember when my dad turned 30 and I thought he was old. How do I remember this so vividly? Because I was 8. Eight. I was old enough to know my dad was old. To understand that 30 was old. Here's one even better...when my mom was 30, I was 10.

Those memories are what make me feel old. That I remember my parents turning 30 and thinking they were SO OLD. Of course, now I realize they weren't. Thirty isn't any different than 29+1. So, Happy 30th Birthday to me!

Surprising Effects of Not Being Allowed to Buy Beer

Today, Joe and a friend of ours were going to tile the bathroom floor in our new house. Unfortunately, since we aren't living there yet, we don't have much to offer guests other than dusty bottles of air temperature water. So Joe asked me to run and get some beer for him and our friend. Not a problem.

I jumped in the car and headed to the gas station down the street. I went in, picked up a six pack of our friend's preferred beer, and proceeded to the cash register. That is where the following conversation occurred.

Chick behind the counter: Can I see your ID?

Me: Oh crap, I forgot it!

Chick: I'm sorry then you can't get the beer.

Me (in my head): Are you freaking kidding?!?!

Me (out loud): Seriously? I have to put the beer back?

Chick: Yeah.

Me (in my head): Hey stupid girl, just sell me the beer!

Me (out loud): I'm going to be 30 next week, can't I just get the beer?

Chick: Sorry, I don't think you look 30, so I can't sell it to you.

Me (in my head): I freaking love this girl...she rocks!

Me (out loud):Oh...ok, I'll go put the beer back.

It's amazing how quickly some chick who won't sell you beer without your ID can make your day.
